It May Be the Most Advanced Phone Ever & You Can Get It Free

Samsung Galaxy S8; A Quick Review

The smartphone scene had started becoming a little monotonous. Whether we are talking about the iPhone 7, Sony Xperia XZ Premium, Huawei P10 or the many other flagship phones revealed recently. We find that they all look and feel similar. Concerning hardware, software or design, we have come to expect nothing new from smartphones; that is until the Samsung Galaxy S8 came along and proved many skeptics wrong.

What we love about it
  • An impressive WQHD+ display
  • A superb camera
  • Incredible design
  • Good battery life

Galaxy S8 pricing

Since the Galaxy S8 is Samsung’s flagship phone, many users knew at the back of their minds it would come at a premium price point. During its global launch on April 28, 2017, the S8 came in at $720 in the US and £689 in the UK if you wanted to buy it upfront. The plus model costs an additional £90.

If you do not want to purchase the phone outright, you still have the option to take it on contract for between £38 and £45 per month from EE, Vodafone, and O2. If you are in the US, buying the phone on contract will set you back between $60 and $8 per month via American carriers such as AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Residents of Canada can get the Galaxy S8 SIM-free version for a premium $1200. This is several dollars higher when compared to the Galaxy S7 launch price, which was at CDN$750 (around CDN$927).

Samsung Galaxy S8's Design and Build

The Galaxy S8 design and make takes the trophy hands down. The exterior look of the phone is a beautiful architecture to behold. You instantly get a futuristic feeling going the moment you hold it in your hand. That is until you put it down and take another phone and you suddenly feel like you’ve been plunged to the dark ages; yes it's that surreal.

The Galaxy S8 inherited some key design features from its predecessor the Galaxy S7 such as the edge screen technology, thickness and weight. The key difference is that the S8 is a couple of millimeters taller leaping from 5.1- to 5.8 inches in screen size, 18.5:9 in aspect ratio and a 570ppi density pixel.

Apart from that, the Galaxy S8 has one of the most unique bodies we have seen on a smartphone. They have reduced the bezels at the top and bottom and gained an 83 percent screen-to-body ratio. This is all very impressive adding to the mystique and futuristic feeling of the phone. To achieve the reduced bezels and the impressive screen-to-body ratio, the entirely all too familiar capacitive keys and physical home button had to go; not that I’m complaining. However, this meant that the fingerprint scanner had to move to the back next to the camera. Many users have said that it would have been preferable if they had the scanner below the camera since it would reduce the chances of smudging the camera in an effort to unlock the phone.

Hardware and Specifications

When it comes to the camera, there hasn’t been much of a change from the Galaxy S7. The S8 packs a 12MP rear camera and an upgraded 8MP front sensor. The pictures are amazing both in medium and low light. If you are into photos, this is indeed the phone for you. With an incredible capture speed and various picture modes, you are sure to get the best value.

The S8 display offers you a resolution of 2960x1440 pixels which is several pixels higher compared to the S7 that had 1440 x 2560 pixels. The screen can handle any intense graphic content or video you throw at it, including the 4K resolution videos.

Regarding processors, the Galaxy S8 has either an Exynos 8895 chipset inside or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 depending on where you are. Both chipsets, however, come with 4GB of RAM so that everything runs smoothly. Samsung decided to go universal on the storage capacity offering all users 64GB of internal memory and a micro SD card slot if you need more storage.

The S8 comes running the latest Android 7.0 Nougat bringing you all the latest apps and user experience features.

Battery capacity is a massive 3000mAh which can give a whole day worth of service to a heavy user. It supports fast charging as well as wireless charging.
